This bowl was made from a local tree that was cut down by a homeowner. I am not perfectly certain of the species, but most likely it is some variety of Apple, perhaps Flowering Crabapple. The beautiful variegations in color are caused by spalting (coloring of wood caused by fungus as a tree starts to die.) The wood came from the crotch of the tree, where one branch diverges into two in a Y. Like most crotches, this piece has a lot of figure elements, which, when combined with the spalting, make this piece spectacular
Due to the need to stabilize the softer spalted areas, this piece is finished with lacquer, so it is not recommended for direct food contact (other than as a fruit bowl).
